Free VC Lists and Investor Databases in 2026: What They Include and Where They Stop
What the best free VC lists and investor databases include, what sits behind the paywall, and when a raise outgrows them: VC Sheet, Signal by NFX, OpenVC's free tier and more.

Details below were checked in July 2026 against each provider's published pages. Offerings change over time, so see each site for current details.
Before spending anything on investor data, it is worth knowing exactly what the free tier of the market gives you, because the best free resources are made with real care and the right founder can get real mileage from them. This guide covers the four free options founders use most, what each includes, and the point where a raise outgrows them.
VC Sheet: the best free curation
VC Sheet organizes more than 1,000 funds and 5,000 investors into browsable, themed sheets (vcsheet.com, as of July 2026): funds that lead seed rounds, investors in specific sectors, emerging managers, and so on. The curation is thoughtful and the browsing experience is pleasant. Contact details, where present, are usually a firm's website or a generic inbox, and we found no export feature (vcsheet.com, as of July 2026), so building an outreach list from it is a manual, sheet-by-sheet job. As a way to learn the landscape and shortlist funds by thesis, it is excellent.
Signal by NFX: warm-intro mapping
Signal organizes investors into category lists (its fintech seed list alone shows thousands of investors, per signal.nfx.com as of July 2026) and its core feature is showing paths to a warm introduction through your own network. Signal's published FAQ describes the product as built around intro paths rather than email addresses (signal.nfx.com/faq, as of July 2026). If your strategy is intro-led and your network is strong, Signal is a real asset and the price is zero.
OpenVC's free tier: directory search
OpenVC's free plan includes unlimited search across its investor directory with 4 filters and 1 investor contact per day through the platform (openvc.app/pricing, as of July 2026). The directory shows investor profiles, with contact flowing through the platform's own channel. As a free research surface it is useful, and we cover the full platform, including the paid tier, in our OpenVC vs Foundersuite guide.
Free downloadable lists
Several companies offer free downloadable investor lists as lead magnets, such as Happierleads' list advertising 10,000+ VCs and angels (happierleads.com, as of July 2026). A free file is a useful starting point. Before building a raise on any list, free or paid, ours included, apply the same checks we detail in our buying guide: a published verification methodology, a coverage promise, and a stated update date.
Where free stops
The free tier is built for orientation, and it is very good at it. Three things consistently sit on the other side of the paywall, across every provider: email addresses (absent or platform-metered), exports (rare), and mail-server verification (understandably, not what free resources are built to do). None of that matters while you are mapping the market. All of it matters the week you start sending.
The bottom line for a founder raising now
Use the free tier to learn the landscape; it is what it does best. When the job becomes reaching the right partner at hundreds of US firms with emails that land, the tool for that job is a verified contact file you own: every firm in our database comes with a named decision-maker and a personal work email that passed SMTP verification with catch-all domains excluded and a second independent check, $497 once. See the database and read the full verification methodology. The map is free; the raise runs on the contact layer.
